Party Chair Gail Teton-Landis announced the Democratic Party’s endorsement of Alejandra Gutierrez, Mike Jordan, and Megan Harmon for seats on the Santa Barbara City Council. The three join endorsed candidates Oscar Gutierrez for Santa Barbara City Council District 3 and Joan Hartman for 3rd District County Supervisor.
“Our Democratic Party endorsed candidates all care enormously about their districts and the city as a whole. They all want to bring vitality to their neighborhoods and the downtown corridor, and they all display a strong dedication to improving the Santa Barbara community and upholding Democratic values of sustainability, equity, and inclusion,” said Party Chair Gail Teton-Landis.
Voters residing on the Eastside, the Mesa, the Westside, and the Downtown area will cast their ballots in time for election day on November 5, 2019.
Alejandra Gutierrez, candidate for City Council in District 1, has worked on the Eastside her entire adult life, beginning as a college and career advisor for Santa Barbara High School. She serves as the Executive Director of the Franklin Service Center, where she has forged partnerships to connect Eastside residents with medical care, healthy food, and a variety of other services. Gutierrez is eager to engage Eastside residents that have been historically underrepresented at City Hall.
Mike Jordan is part of a family that has lived on the Mesa for five generations. A City Planning Commissioner for three terms, he has served on the Regional Water Quality Control Board, and the Santa Barbara YMCA Board of Directors. Mike is passionate about forging partnerships between businesses, nonprofits, and community groups to solve difficult problems.
Meagan Harmon is lawyer, mom, and renter in Downtown Santa Barbara. She currently serves as the City Councilmember representing District 6, having been appointed earlier this year. She previously served as a Commissioner on the Santa Barbara County Housing Authority. Meagan’s top priority is easing the burden on renters in Santa Barbara by building more workforce housing that protects the unique character of the city.
Now the organizing begins. We are gearing up to knock on doors, phone bank, and get the word out to support our endorsed candidates. If you’d like to volunteer, please sign up here.
